Are dino nuggets gluten-free?
Most aren’t. Classic dino nuggets are breaded with wheat flour or breadcrumbs. A few are made without gluten: Yummy Dino Buddies sells a gluten-free box breaded in potato starch, sorghum and tapioca, and Real Good Foods breads its dinosaurs in chickpea flour. Look for “gluten-free” on the bag, and cook them away from wheat nuggets.

Why the breading has gluten
A dino nugget is chicken in a crumb coating, and that coating is usually wheat flour or breadcrumbs. The Celiac Disease Foundation lists breading and coating mixes among the common sources of gluten. Yummy, one of the best-known makers, says its products contain wheat, soy or gluten ingredients, and that it makes one gluten-free version of its dinosaur nuggets.
So the brand isn’t enough. A gluten-free box and a regular one can sit side by side in the freezer case with the same dinosaurs on the front. Read the words on the bag, not the picture.
Gluten-free nuggets you can buy
We read each maker’s own product page on November 7, 2026. Recipes change, so the bag in your hand is the one that counts. We have no connection with any of these companies.
| Nuggets | Breaded with | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Yummy Dino Buddies Gluten Free | Potato starch, sorghum flour and tapioca starch, with a little corn flour | Dinosaur-shaped. No milk or egg in the ingredients, but Yummy says eggs, dairy, fish and sesame may be in other products made on the same line. Its other nuggets contain wheat |
| Real Good Foods Lightly Breaded Dino Chicken Nuggets | Chickpea flour | Dinosaur-shaped and grain-free. Contains milk and egg |
| Applegate Naturals Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets | Rice flour and tapioca starch | Regular nuggets, not dinosaurs. Labeled casein-free |
| Most other brands | Wheat flour or breadcrumbs | Not gluten-free |
How to read the bag
- Look for the word “gluten-free”. In the US, that claim means under 20 parts per million of gluten. A brand doesn’t need a certification logo to use it, but it has to meet the limit.
- Don’t stop at the allergy line. US labels have to name wheat, in the ingredients or in a “Contains” line. Barley and rye aren’t on the FDA’s list of major allergens, so a bag with no “Contains: wheat” can still have barley malt in it.
- “Wheat-free” isn’t gluten-free, for the same reason.
- Check the other allergies too. Gluten-free coatings get their crunch from other things, like chickpea flour, egg or milk. A nugget can be gluten-free and still wrong for a child with an egg or milk allergy.
Cooking them without cross-contact
Gluten-free nuggets can pick up gluten in your own kitchen if they share a tray, a basket or oil with wheat ones. For a child with celiac disease, a small amount matters.
- Cook the gluten-free ones first, or on their own tray lined with foil or parchment, so they never touch crumbs from last time.
- Air fryer baskets hold crumbs. Wash the basket, or line it, if it also cooks regular nuggets.
- Never fry in shared oil. The Celiac Disease Foundation warns about fried food cooked in oil that’s shared with breaded food. Restaurant fryers count, so ask before you order nuggets or fries.
- Use separate tongs and plates when both kinds are on the go.
Here’s what each maker says for cooking from frozen. Appliances vary, so check they’re hot all the way through.
| Nuggets | Oven | Air fryer |
|---|---|---|
| Yummy Dino Buddies Gluten Free | 425 °F for 10 to 12 minutes, turned halfway | 400 °F for 6 to 7 minutes, no preheating |
| Real Good Foods Dino | 400 °F for 14 to 16 minutes, to 165 °F inside | 360 °F, preheated, for 7 to 9 minutes |
| Applegate Naturals Gluten-Free | 425 °F for about 12 minutes, turned halfway | 360 °F for 7 to 10 minutes |
Or make them at home
Our crispy baked gluten-free dino nuggets take 40 minutes and 9 ingredients. Mix ground chicken with an egg, garlic powder, smoked paprika and salt, shape dinosaurs on a lined tray, and freeze them until firm so they hold their shape. Brush them with olive oil, press on crushed gluten-free cornflakes, and bake until they’re golden and 165 °F in the middle, the USDA’s safe temperature for chicken.
Buy cornflakes that say gluten-free. The Celiac Disease Foundation notes that corn flakes often contain malt extract or flavoring, and malt is usually made from barley.
For the same crunch in other shapes, try our gluten-free chicken tenders or fish sticks. Both use eggs. For a child who can’t have egg, our crispy oven chicken nuggets are coated in tapioca flour, and as an AIP recipe they have no egg, dairy or grains.
When the kids have more than one restriction
One child with celiac, one with an egg allergy, and a third who won’t eat anything green: that’s the table Gluten is made for. Add each person once with their allergies and diets. Gluten checks every recipe against all of them and tells you what to change for anyone who can’t eat it as written, and you can check a food for anyone before it goes in the cart. Questions
Are Yummy dino nuggets gluten-free?
Only the box that says gluten-free. Yummy says its products contain wheat, soy or gluten ingredients, and that it makes one gluten-free version of its dinosaur nuggets.
Are dino nuggets safe for someone with celiac disease?
Nuggets labeled gluten-free have to meet the FDA’s limit of under 20 parts per million of gluten. Cook them on a clean or lined tray, never in oil shared with breaded food. Your doctor or dietitian can tell you how careful to be.
Can I air fry gluten-free nuggets?
Yes. Yummy’s gluten-free ones take 6 to 7 minutes at 400 °F from frozen, and Real Good Foods’ take 7 to 9 minutes at 360 °F. Wash or line the basket first if it also cooks wheat nuggets.
Are restaurant chicken nuggets gluten-free?
Usually not. Most are breaded with wheat, and even a gluten-free nugget can be fried in oil shared with breaded food. Ask how they’re made and cooked before you order.
Is plain chicken gluten-free?
Yes. Gluten gets in through breading, marinades, seasoning and some pre-seasoned or self-basting meat. The Celiac Disease Foundation notes that “starch” or “dextrin” on a meat or poultry label can come from wheat.
Are gluten-free nuggets dairy-free too?
Not always. Real Good Foods’ dinosaur nuggets contain milk and egg. Yummy’s gluten-free ones list no milk or egg, but the company says both may be in other products made on the same line. Read the label for every allergy at your table.
